Welcome to
THE PRACTITIONER
-
This course is specially designed for those who need to work with PICs, either through the design, fabrication, or packaging of devices, engineers and technical staff working in other areas such as RF.
-
The course will require travel to Bristol, Southampton, and Torbay for a total of five in-person training days with additional online content. Practitioners will be required to engage with content in their own time.
-
Whilst prior experience in photonics is desirable, it is not essential for this practitioner stream.
-
For this year's programme, we're accepting registrations from UK-based companies only, limited to one attendant per company.
What will you gain?
-
An understanding of where PICs can be deployed, their advantages and limitations.
-
An appreciation of PIC components and the ability to produce de-risked designs within foundry fabrication rules.
-
An intuitive feel for the operation of passive PIC circuitry through hands-on guided lesson plans.
-
An ability to translate simulated designs into a GDS format accepted by PIC foundries.
-
Hands-on PIC fabrication and packaging skills.
Planned Activities
1st Session: 2025 TBC
Location: Online
Activities
-
Introductions
-
A session covering PIC introductory concepts
-
How do we couple light to such a small chip?
-
How does light propagate around a PIC?
-
How can it be directed in useful ways?
-
How can we add an element of tunability to something with no moving parts?
-
What will we investigate as PIC Practitioners?
-
-
Simulation training primer video content will be introduced and released
2nd Session: 2025 TBC
Location: University of Bristol (Clifton Campus)
Activities
-
We will complete a series of hands-on lesson plans using the LightPort:Edu teaching tool
-
A briefing on the theory of PIC fabrication processes
-
A GDS layout workshop
3rd Session: 2025 TBC
Location: University of Southampton (Cleanroom)
Activities
-
A hands-on two-day cleanroom PIC processing workshop following the fabrication of your own PIC design. You will perform the lithography, etching, cladding deposition, wafer dicing, metallisation, and wafer scale testing.
4th Session: 2025 TBC
Location: Bay Photonics, Paignton, Torbay
Activities
-
A hands-on one-day PIC packaging workshop.
